Types of Nursing Degrees available in India



If you are thinking about pursuing a career in in nursing and related field , the following programmes will help you to  get there.

Nursing Programmess offered in India 


The programmes include diplomas , bachelors, masters, Post masters and PhD in nursing.

Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife ( ANM) - 2 years - Nursing Examination Board - R. ANM

  • The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of the year and the maximum age for admission shall be 35 years.
  • The minimum educational requirements shall be 10 + 2 
  • Student shall be medically fit.
  • Students qualified in 10+2 Arts or Science examination conducted by National Institute of Open School.

General Nursing & Midwifery( GNM) - 3.5 years-Nursing Examination Board- R.N & R.M

  • Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years. There is no age bar for ANM/LHV.
  • 10+2 class passed preferably Science (PCB) & English with aggregate of 40% marks.
  • Registered as ANM with State Nursing Registration Council.
  • Student shall be medically fit.

B. Sc (Basic)- 4 years University- R.N & R.M

  • The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year.
  • 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/ English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks 
  • Student shall be medically fit.

B.Sc (Post Basic) Regular - 2 yrs- University- Additional Qualification

  • Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university.
  • Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. 
  • Candidates shall be medically fit.

B.Sc (Post Basic) Distance - 3 yrs- University ( IGNOU) - Additional Qualification

  • Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university.
  • Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. 
  • Candidates shall be medically fit.

M. Sc -  2 years - University - Additional Qualification

  • The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife of equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council. 
  • B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
  • Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
  • Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

M. Phil 1 year (Full time) 2 years (part time) - University - Additional Qualification

  • The candidate must have passed MSc Nursing recognized by Indian Nursing Council with at least 60% marks in aggregate

PhD  3-5 years - University - Additional Qualification

  • M.Phil (Nursing) or M.Sc (Nursing) or a Post Graduate degree in nursing recognized by INC with 3 years teaching or Clinical Experience after M.Sc (N), for enrollment for Ph.D. in Nursing (part-time) under Faculty of Nursing RGUHS.
  • The candidates should have passed M.Sc Nursing with a minimum of 60% marks.
  • Candidates working in Teaching Institution/Hospital/Community Center.
